🗓 On 15 October, the Fourth Committee of the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution entitled “Combating Contemporary Forms of Colonialism”.
The draft resolution was prepared by the Group of Friends in Defence of the UN Charter (#GDFC), with Russia’s active participation. Nineteen countries co-sponsored the document.
The resolution is non-confrontational in nature and aims to unite countries around a common cause.
❗️It emphasises the need to eradicate neocolonial practices, including interference in internal affairs, unilateral coercive measures, the imposition of unjust international agreements and restrictions on technological development.
These practices constitute one of the most serious obstacles to achieving the goals and principles of the UN Charter and are at the root of numerous issues on the UN agenda.
✅ The resolution was supported by 85 Member States
❌ 49 voted against it
▪️23 abstained
Significantly, its supporters included #BRICS countries and states from Africa, Asia and Latin America, while opponents were predominantly countries of the “collective West”, many of which are former colonial powers.
They refused to support the document despite having participated in drafting it, with some of their proposed amendments incorporated into the final text.
The voting results clearly demonstrate that the transition towards a multipolar world is well underway. Eliminating all forms of pressure, subordination and dependency from interstate relations is an integral part of this process.
The global majority is no longer willing to accept the monopoly of a narrow group of countries.
For these nations, combating neocolonialism is not an abstract concept, but a matter of pursuing sovereign domestic and foreign policies, strengthening national security and preserving national identity.
☝️ The Russian side expects the adopted resolution, which builds on two previous General Assembly resolutions on this subject, to receive even broader support when it is considered by the UN General Assembly in plenary session in the near future.
This would help firmly establish the fight against all manifestations of colonialism as one of the key priorities of the United Nations.
