🎖 #OTD in 1967, the famous "Heroes of the Battle of Stalingrad" memorial was opened on Mamayev Kurgan hill in Volgograd. Covering a huge 26 hectares and stretching 1.5 kilometres long, it is the largest monument built to remember the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany. It marks the exact spot of World War II's bloodiest turning point.
The main highlight of the park is the giant "The Motherland Calls!" statue. The figure itself is 52 metres tall, and its massive sword reaches 85 metres into the sky. When it was built, it was the tallest sculpture in the world, showing a powerful rallying cry to defend the country.
✨ This statue is the middle part of a famous three-monument art series about the Soviet war sword. The story shows the sword being made by factory workers in the "Rear-to-Front" memorial (Magnitogorsk, Ural), raised high in defence at Stalingrad, and finally brought down in victory by the "Warrior-Liberator" statue in Berlin.
