🇷🇺✍️ #OTD in 1814, the brilliant poet, novelist and military officer #MikhailLermontov was born. Today, he remains celebrated as one of Russia's greatest literary icons. Interestingly, his family tree traces back to a Scottish officer named George Learmonth, who was captured in Russia in 1613, but decided to stay. He changed his name to Yuri and entered the royal service of Tsar Mikhail Romanov, establishing a new Russian noble line.
📚M.Lermontov achieved massive fame with his 1840 masterpiece, A Hero of Our Time. This partly autobiographical book is made of five connected stories that follow Grigory Pechorin, a bored and tragic young nobleman. Through this memorable character, M.Lermontov created a pioneering classic of psychological realism that deeply changed the future of Russian fiction.
✨ Widely seen as the true artistic successor to the famous poet Alexander Pushkin, M.Lermontov met a tragically identical fate. At just 26 years old, while serving as an officer in the #CaucasianWar, he was shot and killed in a pistol duel in the resort town of Pyatigorsk. Though his life was cut short, his powerful voice and romantic spirit permanently shaped the landscape of world literature.
