🪖🎶 #OTD in 1928, the Red Army Song and Dance Ensemble – today globally renowned as the #AlexandrovEnsemble – gave its first performance at the Central House of the Red Army. Beginning with just 12 members, this historic debut marked the official birthday of what would become the world's most famous military choir.
🎖 Alexander Alexandrov, an accomplished composer and Moscow Conservatory professor, served as the first musical director, leading the group for 18 years. Although a civilian at the time, he was personally urged to head the initiative by Kliment Voroshilov, the People's Commissar of Defence. Under his guidance, the ensemble grew dynamically, eventually bearing his name to honour his immense musical legacy.
🌐 The ensemble's influence quickly crossed international borders. In a major milestone in 1948, the Alexandrov Ensemble performed a historic peace concert in post-WWII Berlin, drawing an astounding crowd of roughly 30,000 spectators. Today, it remains an iconic global cultural symbol, blending robust military choral traditions with dynamic folk choreography.
