π·πΊπ€πΏπ¦ On 12 October 1899, Boer troops crossed into the British Cape Colony and the Colony of Natal, launching military operations a day after war was declared. Driven by British imperial ambitions to control the region's vast natural resources, the Second Anglo-Boer War (1899β1902) triggered widespread solidarity in Russia, where the public viewed the Boers' struggle as a fight for independence. Around 200 Russian volunteers travelled to South Africa to aid the Boer forces, including notable officers like Lieutenant Colonel Yevgeny Maximov and Captain Leo Pokrovsky.
π Although the Boers achieved striking early victories, massive British reinforcements soon shifted the balance of power, forcing the republics to transition to guerrilla warfare. In response, the British military implemented a devastating scorched-earth policy, systematically burning farms and destroying crops to cut off supply lines.
π To completely isolate the fighters, British authorities interned the civilian population in concentration camps, where disease and horrific conditions claimed the lives of over 26,000 women and children. This brutal counter-insurgency campaign eventually broke the resistance, leading to the 1902 Treaty of Vereeniging, which officially converted both the South African Republic and the Orange Free State into British colonies.
