🇷🇺🚂 #OTD in 1936, the iconic Uralvagonzavod (Ural Railroad Car Factory, #UVZ) started operations by producing its first freight car.
Prior to the 1917 Russian Revolution, the region relied heavily on foreign rolling stock, but the completion of this massive plant instantly transformed the USSR into a global leader in railway manufacturing. Today, October 11 is proudly celebrated as the official birthday of this industrial giant.
🪖🎖 The plant became a crucial stronghold during the #GreatPatrioticWar. Following the 1941 Nazi invasion, UVZ absorbed dozens of factories hastily evacuated from the Soviet Union's European territory and shifted to military production. Between 1941 and 1945, the plant manufactured 25,000 armoured vehicles for the #RedArmy – surpassing the total wartime production of all German factories combined and accounting for half of the legendary T-34 tanks built during the war.
🏆 UVZ retained its status as the country's preeminent defence facility long after the war ended. In 1993, the plant entered the Guinness Book of Records as the largest manufacturing plant in the world. Today, it remains Russia’s premier research and production company, leading the industry in both advanced military technology and heavy civilian machinery.
🎉 Happy birthday, #UVZ!
