#Smolensk
🇷🇺✨ Today, the Russian Hero City of Smolensk celebrates its 1,163rd anniversary, marking its first historical mention in 863 AD!
Founded on the upper Dnieper River, Smolensk grew into a vital trading hub along the legendary route "from the Varangians to the Greeks." While it escaped direct destruction during the Mongol invasion, the resulting regional instability sparked a four-century territorial tug-of-war between Lithuania, Poland and Moscow.
🪖 After enduring the chaos of World War I and the Russian Civil War, the city faced its darkest chapter following the Nazi invasion on June 22, 1941. Smolensk was occupied for over two years until its final liberation by the Red Army on September 25, 1943 – a historic date proudly celebrated today as City Day.
🤩 Despite catastrophic World War II destruction, much of the historic old town and its monumental fortress walls have been meticulously restored. Today, modern Smolensk thrives as a vibrant regional hub for education, tourism and diverse spiritual traditions.
