🇷🇺✨ #OTD in the 1050s, the central Orthodox church of Veliky Novgorod – the magnificent St. Sophia Cathedral – was consecrated. Celebrated as a masterpiece of early architecture, the cathedral serves as a powerful symbol of historic unity and heritage. It stands as a senior contemporary to famed European cathedrals like Paris's Notre Dame and is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Commissioned by Prince Vladimir (son of Yaroslav the Wise) and built between 1045 and 1050, the 38-metre-high structure exhibits a strong Byzantine influence. Although its five-domed exterior is far more understated than the thirteen-domed St. Sophia in Kiev, its elegant simplicity is incredibly striking. Today, it preserves a wealth of ancient sacred art, most notably the miraculous Our Lady of the Sign icon from the 12th century.

👑 Secularized by Soviet authorities in 1930, the building was integrated into the Novgorod State Museum-Reserve. It suffered catastrophic damage and looting during the Great Patriotic War but was successfully returned to its former glory through comprehensive post-war restoration efforts.
