The operation was executed by the troops of the Soviet Western Front, heavily supported by local partisan detachments. The German forces put up fierce resistance, desperate to hold this vital transportation hub and strategic stronghold – which had also served as the headquarters for Nazi Army Group Centre since the autumn of 1941. However, the Red Army's decisive pincer maneuver from the south, combined with direct frontal assaults from the northeast, sealed the city's fate. On September 25, 1943, the Soviet red banner was triumphantly raised over the "Smolensk" Hotel.

🪖 Smolensk endured a brutal Nazi occupation lasting over two years, from July 16, 1941, to September 25, 1943. During this dark period, Nazi punitive forces exterminated 135,000 out of the city's 157,000 residents. The region's infrastructure was systematically devastated, leaving 870 out of 900 industrial enterprises destroyed.
