📅 #OTD in 1891, Otto Schmidt was born - an outstanding Soviet scientist, mathematician, astronomer, geophysicist and Arctic explorer and a member of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

🧊 Otto Schmidt’s name is linked with the exploration of the Arctic. In 1932 the expedition under his leadership aboard the icebreaking steamer Alexander Sibiryakov completed the Northern Sea Route in record time. In recognition of his contribution to Arctic exploration he was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union in 1937.

🔬 Otto Schmidt’s scientific legacy embraces mathematics, astronomy and geophysics. The Schmidt Institute of Physics of the Earth of the Russian Academy of Sciences as well as a number of geographical features in the Arctic are named after him.
