🖥 Debt Burden and Investment in Artificial Intelligence in the Global Economy

This digest of international economic news examines rising government debt servicing costs in China, the impact of investment in artificial intelligence on global economic growth, and changes in the labor market.

🇨🇳 Rising Debt Burden in China Limits Economic Stimulus Capacity (Financial Times)
According to the Financial Times, rising interest payments on China's government debt are constraining fiscal capacity to support economic growth and stimulate domestic demand.
According to estimates by The Conference Board research organization, debt servicing payments are expected to account for 19.2% of the government budget in 2026, compared with 12% in 2014.
The growing debt burden is also putting pressure on local government finances. Their interest payments have increased by an average of 16% annually since 2014. Combined interest payments by central and local governments are expected to rise from 348 billion yuan in 2014 to 1.4 trillion yuan in 2026, equivalent to approximately $209 billion.
Robin Xing, Morgan Stanley's Chief China Economist, expects the near-term focus to be on accelerating the implementation of the budget approved at the beginning of the year.

🧠Investment in Artificial Intelligence Supports Global Economic Growth (Reuters)
International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva stated that substantial investment in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure is helping sustain global economic growth at around 3%. Asian economies supplying equipment and technology products, including Thailand, are benefiting significantly.
According to Georgieva, increased investment in AI infrastructure could boost economic growth by 0.5–1 percentage point in advanced Asian economies and by 0.2–0.8 percentage points in developing economies across the region.
At the same time, AI is changing the nature of work and the demand for professional skills. According to IMF estimates, AI could eventually affect 40% of jobs worldwide, enhancing workers' capabilities in some occupations while reducing the relevance of others or potentially eliminating certain jobs.
Preliminary research indicates that 10% of jobs in the United States already require AI-related skills. Meanwhile, employment in occupations involving routine and repetitive tasks is declining, while job opportunities are increasing in two relatively low-paid sectors: construction and data centers.
