Caring for family: a core value in Russian culture 👋
In Russia, respect for family and care for loved ones are deeply rooted cultural values, instilled from an early age. Respecting elders, looking after one’s parents, and supporting those around us are not simply ideals — they are reflected in everyday life. For many people who relocate to Russia from abroad, this is one of the first cultural differences they notice.
Our CEO, Jakob Pinneker, shares his observations on how respect for older generations is expressed in Russia — from everyday interactions on the metro to the way people communicate and the broader dynamics of family life. He describes this emphasis on intergenerational respect as one of his earliest and most striking impressions of living in Russia.
Here are some examples of the support available to older people in Russia through public and regional programmes:
▫️Subsidised prescription medicines and discounts on certain medications
▫️Free annual preventive health check-ups and vaccinations, subject to eligibility
▫️Access to subsidised spa and health resort treatment through social insurance programmes, where eligible
▫️Free or discounted public transport in many regions
▫️Reduced-price admission to cultural events and a range of leisure activities
▫️Discounts on air and rail travel through selected programmes and offers
Yet in Russia, the culture of care extends far beyond the older generation. Children’s safety, comfort, and well-being are also important priorities, with a range of measures and services designed to support their development and help families create a stable environment in which their children can thrive.
Our resettlers have noticed this, too. In the second part of the video, we’ll explore their experiences and share more of their observations. Stay tuned for Part 2!
