Friendship through the eyes of Nizhny Novgorod 🫶
We took to the streets of Nizhny Novgorod and asked passersby one simple question: What does friendship mean to you?
In Russia, friendship is more than a warm word. It is part of the country’s cultural fabric. Being a friend means showing up when it matters, offering help without keeping score, and standing by someone without expecting anything in return. Mutual support is not just a courtesy — it is a deeply rooted value that brings people together and keeps friendships strong for years.
Here are four fascinating insights into friendship in Russian culture.
▫️A friend is more than an acquaintance
In English, friend can describe anything from a casual acquaintance to someone who knows your deepest secrets. In Russian, "drug" ("друг") often carries a deeper meaning, suggesting trust, loyalty, and a genuine emotional bond.
▫️Helping out is simply what friends do
In Russia, asking a friend for help is a natural part of the relationship. Whether it means helping someone move, renovating an apartment, picking them up at four in the morning, or looking after their child, these gestures are expressions of trust and closeness.
The Russian word "vyruchit" ("выручить") captures this beautifully: it means more than helping — it means coming through for someone when they need you most.
▫️Friendship thrives in everyday life
Russian friendships often revolve around the kitchen table, a country house ("dacha"), a traditional bathhouse ("banya"), fishing trips, or foraging for mushrooms in the forest. Meals with friends can last well into the night, filled with heartfelt toasts and conversations that go far beyond small talk.
The kitchen has a special place in Russian culture, too. During the Soviet era, it became a space for candid conversations that were difficult to have in public. That tradition of openness and trust still resonates today.
▫️Being there means listening — and taking action.
In Russian friendships, you can speak openly, share your worries, and let off steam without expecting someone to solve every problem. Sometimes, simply being heard is enough. At other times, friendship means offering practical, tangible help. Both are natural expressions of care.
The answers we heard on the streets of Nizhny Novgorod were different, but they all pointed to one simple truth: a true friend is someone you can count on.
