This week, Nizhny Novgorod marked a defining moment in the city’s sporting and cultural life: the spectacular Volga Arena officially opened on Strelka.

Far more than a hockey venue, the arena is set to become a new landmark for Nizhny Novgorod — and the new home of the legendary Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod hockey club.

Four years in the making, the project is impressive in both scale and ambition. The arena accommodates up to 12,000 spectators and occupies more than 95,000 square metres — essentially an entire city block brought together under one roof.

The name Volga Arena pays tribute to the legendary Volga automobile brand, whose production has recently been revived in Nizhny Novgorod. Designed as a truly multifunctional venue, the complex will host far more than hockey: concerts, spectacular shows, major events and a wide range of entertainment will also take place here.

But what truly sets the arena apart is its extraordinary infrastructure. Volga Arena is the only venue in Russia featuring three full-size ice rinks, giving it a level of functionality and versatility unmatched by any other sports facility in the country.

The arena officially opened on September 14 with a spectacular inauguration ceremony and a vibrant show. And the very first hockey game on the new ice delivered the perfect beginning: Torpedo secured a victory, marking a symbolic start to a new chapter for the club.
