Sen. Cory Booker: "Call Congress Back... We Need To Do Someting Bold" About AI
https://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2026/09/20/sen_cory_booker_call_congress_back_we_need_to_do_someting_bold_about_ai.html

Sen. Cory Booker sidestepped a question about an outright "pause" in the development of artificial intelligence during an interview Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press," but signalled that he has been warning about the possible dangers for years.

KRISTEN WELKER: You've called on President Trump to summon Congress back to deal with this issue. It comes as Senator Bernie Sanders, some of your other colleagues on the left, actually want to pause advanced AI development and halt new AI data centers. Would you support an outright pause on AI development right now?

SEN. CORY BOOKER: Let's be clear. Artificial intelligence without human wisdom, discernment and judgment is going to be catastrophic.

We have three problems right now. One is making sure the cataclysmic predictions don't become real. Two, stopping the harms right now. We're seeing chatbots hurting our children, scams hurting seniors, surveillance driving up prices. The third thing is capturing the benefits of AI for the American people, not just making a handful of people billionaires and even trillionaires. There's so much upside for humanity.

So what we need to do right now is have common sense. Yes, if the ability to control AI is outpaced by the threats, we should do things to slow it down. That's common sense.

Three years ago, I was writing to the then-president saying we need to do common-sense steps like having fierce, independent evaluations of AI, rigorous testing of the models pre-deployment, and safeguards. We haven't seen that yet, and the consequences of that lack of action is making this all the more threatening.

Call Congress back in. This is a time we need to do something bold and common sense when it comes to AI.

Abdul El-Sayed: America Can Afford "$2.8 Billion to Israel For 2,000-Pound Bombs" To "Drop On Other People's Schools" -- Why Not Build Schools Here Instead?
https://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2026/09/20/abdul_el-sayed_america_can_afford_28_billion_to_israel_for_2000-pound_bombs_so_why_not_teachers_instead.html

Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdule El-Sayed, at a "town hall" Saturday in Saginaw, rpeated the basic premise of his campaign: take the money the U.S. spends on war and military aid to Israel, and spend it at home.

ABDUL EL-SAYED: When you look at the school districts that got forced into receivership or emergency management, they are almost always school districts in predominantly Black communities. When you use the historical racism of the past as the engine, you are not serious about social mobility.

We need to fully fund school infrastructure. A lot of people are like, How are you going to pay for that? I don't know - don't send bombs to other places to drop on schools, but here.

[APPLAUSE]

We just did $2.8 billion in boms- 2,000-pound bombs. 2,000 bombs never fed anybody. It never built anything. It never taught anybody. $2.8 billion to Israel for 2,000-pound bombs. How are we going to pay for it? Not $2.8 billion in bombs - $2.8 billion in schools.

[APPLAUSE]

And then, I believe we need a teacher minimum wage.

[APPLAUSE]

And I believe that not only should we be finding teachers, asking teachers to be teachers and nurses and janitors, social workers, mental health professionals - teachers need to be able to be teachers. So you need to hire the other people around the teachers to do those other things.

Here's El-Sayed's full even Satursday:

Sarah Huckabee Sanders: Hard To Argue Against A Free Press When You're Literally In The Oval Office With The President
https://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2026/09/19/sarah_huckabee_sanders_hard_to_argue_against_a_free_press_when_youre_literally_in_the_oval_office_with_the_president.html

Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders (R-AR), who served as Trump's White House press secretary during his first term, was in the Oval Office as President Donald Trump sparred with reporters over his decision to ban CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House (https://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2026/09/18/trump_defends_wh_ban_of_cnn_msnow_politico_what_i_do_ask_is_a_semblance_of_truth.html).

REPORTER: Mr. President, to put a finer point on it, how is this action legal and constitutional considering the First Amendment? And Gov. [Sarah Huckabee] Sanders, you were White House press secretary. Do you agree with this plan to ban news outlets?

TRUMP: I'll just answer again. I'll say it the same way. I don't think somebody should be allowed to come in and write fake stories. They're fake news. And that's why they have no credibility. That's why. So I had 96% negative coverage during the election, and I won.

Because they have no credibility. I got 96. I guess NBC was 93% negative. So 93% with all of the victories I've had, everything's been a victory. It's all been a victory. And I won the election like nobody's ever seen anything like it.

They never write a good story. They won't write a story about I just reduced drug prices by 40, 50, 60, 70, 80%. I will get a good story out of these people. From some of them, I will. I'll get one from him. I'll get one from him. I'll get a few of them. But it's sick. There's something wrong with a country that can allow people to write purposely negative stories. Now, if they want to write them, that's fine. But I don't have to let them into my into the people's house. Yeah, please.

Governor, go ahead.

GOV. SARAH HUCKABEE SANDERS (R-AR): Sure. I think it's hard for you to argue against a free press when you're literally standing in the Oval Office asking questions of the President of the United States. He's been more accessible and easier to talk to than any president in history.

Think about the previous administration where he could barely get through a press conference and yet you have the opportunity to stand here in the Oval Office and ask questions to the leader of the free world. That's pretty free. And you're standing here asking those questions.

I think the President is right to support the First Amendment, but he's also right to ask that you be honest and fair. That's not an unreasonable thing.

Obama: There's A "Non-Zero Chance" AI Could Decide Humans Are "Not Necessary"
https://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2026/09/19/obama_theres_a_non-zero_chance_ai_could_decide_humans_are_not_necessary.html

Former President Barack Obama discusses the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence and warns that AI systems could potentially decide humans are unnecessary.

FORMER PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA: I do not believe that this technology is overhyped. The commercial benefits of it may be overhyped. The valuations of AI companies may be overhyped. The technology itself is not overhyped. I've been tracking this for a long time. In 2015, 16, in the last couple years of my presidency, I actually was focused on this, pulled together a commission of the best minds in this area to talk about not just the technology, but also the political, social, economic, ethical concerns around this.

Produced a terrific report. Apparently, it got put in the same bin as my pandemic, proposal, it wasn't picked up by the administration that followed me. So we could see this coming, but part of what makes this profound is it accelerates.

So what is happening right now is we have reached this point of what's called recursive learning, where essentially, and we had anticipated this, but we're now seeing it. The machines are starting to be able to teach themselves. They don't have to wait for humans to start figuring things out.

And so if you think about it as, let's say humans are teachers, and the AI models are students. As recently as, let's say, a year ago, 90% of the learning of these models was given to them by the teacher, humans, and maybe five to 10%, they could fill in some gaps and figure stuff out. In less than a year, maybe even less than six months, we're now at a stage where it's 50-50.

And if the trend lines continue, the expectation is it might be 90-10. What this means is that we're now, if the learning track of AI has been like this, we're now hitting the hockey stick trajectory, where the models are going to get smarter and smarter and better and better at a much faster pace, at an exponential pace. What are the risks of that?

There's the big science fiction risk of, wow, these models get smarter than us, and they decide humans are fine, but not necessary. They start setting their own goals, and the killer robots kill us, or we bow down to them. I do not want to exaggerate that particular risk, but I will say there is a non-zero chance of that happening.

But that's not actually the risk that I'm most concerned about, although it's the risk that gets most attention. And the reason that's a risk is not because the computer models are consciousness, it doesn't mean that they feel malice towards humans. It's just that if they start setting their own agendas, you may get a misalignment between what they want to do and what we want them to do, and that gap can be dangerous.

Obama on Trump WH Press Ban: What Would Have Happened If I Said, "FOX News, You're Out of Here?"
https://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2026/09/19/obama_on_trump_wh_press_ban_what_would_have_happened_if_i_said_fox_news_youre_out_of_here.html

Former President Barack Obama reacts to President Donald Trump banning reporters from CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House (https://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2026/09/18/trump_defends_wh_ban_of_cnn_msnow_politico_what_i_do_ask_is_a_semblance_of_truth.html).

FORMER PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA: My imagination could not foresee some of the stuff that's going on right now. I believe there was just an announcement that the White House decided, you know what, CNN, MS NOW, maybe the New York Times was included, you just can't come to the White House press briefings anymore because you're giving the current president unfavorable coverage.

I'm trying to think what would have happened if I had said, you know what, FOX News, get out of here. It's unimaginable. But the point I'm making here is that if you have a certain cohort, let's call it 30 to 35% of the country right now, which thinks that's okay, well, what that means is we have not developed the kind of understanding of what democracy requires. And we've got to shore that back up. I don't think that's inevitable. I don't think all is lost on that front. But we have to roll up our sleeves and get working.

Haberman: Trump Has "Fundamentally Reimagined" The Presidency And Shown The Post-World War II Order "Won't Stand"
https://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2026/09/19/haberman_trump_has_fundamentally_reimagined_the_presidency_and_shown_the_post-world_war_ii_order_wont_stand.html

"Regime Change" co-author Maggie Haberman argues the Trump presidency represents a fundamental reimagining of presidential power and a form of regime change in the United States.

MISHAL HUSAIN, BLOOMBERG: The subtitle of your first book, Confidence Man, is the making of Donald Trump and the breaking of America. Do you think that by the time he leaves office, he will have changed America? And I'm thinking primarily of what we're describing, the way the government works, this pattern that, you know, the use of executive orders or the mass use of pardons again.

MAGGIE HABERMAN, THE NEW YORK TIMES: I don't think that we are unlikely to see another Donald Trump anytime soon, if ever again, because he is sui generis for a lot of reasons, including the celebrity we were talking about. But this is also the reason that the title Regime Change exists for Jonathan in my book. We were describing and witnessing a form of regime change in our own country.

It's not about Iran. It was we thought of this title long before the Venezuela raid to capture Maduro earlier this year in Caracas. This is a fundamental reimagining of the U.S. presidency. It has shown that the post-World War II order won't stand. I don't know why any future president in this country would have the trust of European leaders, Democrat or Republican, frankly, certainly Republican, because I think they'll assume that it's from the same party of Trump, unless it's somebody who completely disavows Trump. And that's not going to be a Republican anytime soon.

What you're asking is essentially what levels of pushing the limits does a future president agree to pull back on? Biden actually did on a lot of them, almost all, in fact. And his party was frustrated with him.

They want to see a fighter. Expansions of executive power have occurred before, and there have been corrections, obviously, after Nixon in particular. The imperial presidency is a term that was coined in 1973. But it's going to really require a heave of different branches of government to try to institute more formal change for a system that is primarily norms and not laws. So we'll see.

RAMESH PONNURU, NATIONAL REVIEW EDITOR: Well, I don't think that she has grounds for saying that she was betrayed. There were plenty of signs from what the president was saying on the campaign trail in 2024 and from the people he surrounded himself with that there would be, in fact, mass deportation.

I mean, that was the phrase they used constantly during the 2024 campaign. Now, it turns out, though, that the way they have gone about implementing that policy, they have lost huge amount of support, not just among Hispanics. Immigration was a huge, powerful, positive issue for Trump's reelection in 2024.

That advantage has now been squandered because people don't like the face of the immigration enforcement regime.

Ponnuru: GOP Rep. Salazar Has No Grounds To Claim Betrayal By Trump; He Campaigned On Mass Deportations
https://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2026/09/19/ponnuru_gop_rep_salazar_has_no_grounds_to_claim_betrayal_by_trump_he_campaigned_on_mass_deportations.html

GEOFF BENNETT, PBS NEWSHOUR: I want to shift our focus to something we saw this past week from the Florida Republican Congresswoman Maria Salazar. She shot this ad that's up on the airwaves now in Florida just weeks ahead of the midterms breaking with the Trump administration over his immigration agenda. Take a look at this ad.

REP. MARIA ELVIRA SALAZAR (R-FL): Mr. President, some of your immigration enforcement efforts have gone too far. In July, 50 percent of the 50,000 people that were detained had no criminal record. The same Hispanics who helped you get to the White House in 2024 feel betrayed today. (https://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2026/09/17/gop_rep_salazar_to_trump_some_of_your_enforcement_efforts_have_gone_too_far.html)

BENNETT: She recorded that ad in front of the White House, a not-so-subtle message there. So, Jonathan, what does it mean that a Republican like Maria Salazar, a district that Trump won by 15 points, is up with an ad like this?

JONATHAN CAPEHART, MS NOW: It's the clearest signal, to me anyway, that Republicans are in trouble with their House majority, that Republicans are in trouble with Latino voters.

I mean, Congresswoman Salazar is right. I mean, President Trump won the biggest share of Latino voters since President Bush. I can't remember it was his first election or the second.

Yes, in the second election.

And so I remember at the convention, where she -- you and Amna tried to interview her over the din and talking to her about the president, the first assassination attempt, and she vowed right then and there, he's a changed person. He is going to be different from the way he was before.

And what we have seen since is that nothing's changed. He's the same, if not worse than the first Trump administration. The key word she used in that ad, and I'm glad you played it, was betrayed. And I had not seen the ad. I only read the stories when it focused on it earlier.

And I thought about David Brooks months ago when he talked about how Trump voters must feel betrayed by the president because he promised all these things and he has not fulfilled them.

And for her to use that word, and for her specifically in a district that she won her seat the last time by 20-something points, he won her district comfortably, for her to come out in this way direct to camera, to your point, from the White House, should be a signal to Republicans in general and to the president in particular that they are in trouble.

BENNETT: And, Ramesh, as Jonathan mentioned we interviewed her at the RNC, the convention. Amna interviewed her more recently and pressed her on the potential for mass deportations because it was known then that there weren't enough undocumented immigrants with criminal records to reach the deportation numbers that the administration was calling for.

So here's part of that interview.

SALAZAR: That deportation is going to be among those criminals who are the gang members, the got-aways, the Tren de Aragua. I am sure -- and I'm going to be the number one...

AMNA NAWAZ, PBS NEWSHOUR: Not all 200,000 undocumented in your community, is that what you're saying?

SALAZAR: I am sure that we're not, that the Trump administration is not going to be targeting those people who have been here for more than five years, that have American kids, that don't have criminal records, that have been working in the economy and paying taxes.

BENNETT: So do you make of what she's saying now?

Abdul El-Sayed Mocks VP Vance's Beard, Accuses Him Of Using Testosterone Therapy: "I'm All Natural, Bro"
https://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2026/09/19/abdul_el-sayed_mocks_vp_vances_beard_accuses_him_of_using_testosterone_therapy_im_all_natural_bro.html

Michigan Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed challenged Vice President JD Vance to a weightlifting competition in an interview with a TMZ reporter during his visit to Capitol Hill.

ABDUL EL-SAYED, DEMOCRATIC MICHIGAN U.S. SENATE CANDIDATE: I had an opportunity to sit down with a lot of my colleagues yesterday, and these are folks who are motivated, they're excited, they understand that when we take power back in elections like mine, a lot of them are going to hold-

TMZ REPORTER: We'll see. I mean, that's the thing, I think people just think they're weak.

[CROSSTALK]

EL-SAYED: Ohio J.D. Vance, amped up on TRT with a beard that, you know, I don't know, frankly, somebody should tell me if it's real. If I actually met him, I'd be like, all right, let's just actually see, how much paste did you have to put on your face to get that little-

REPORTER: You would do that. If you saw him, you'd really go like, hey, man.

EL-SAYED: At least, I mean, at least mine is what you see is what you get. And at the end of the day, with my beard, look, I'm happy to say if he thinks that my beard is somehow indicative of my strength, I'm happy to invite him to any weight room in any place. We could do it in DC, and let's see. I'd love to see him on a bench. I'd love to see him on a squat. I'd love to understand if he's as strong as he likes to pretend he is.

REPORTER: A bench off. I'd be there. I'd be the judge.

EL-SAYED: We could squat. We could run. Whatever he wants to do. JD, listen, man. You talk a good game. You went to Ohio State, didn't even know how to handle the trophy when you had to pick it up, right? And now you're on what, like juiced up on TRT. I'm all natural, bro.

REPORTER: Okay, sh*t.

EL-SAYED: So, I'd like to understand what your dose is, and I'd like to understand if your beard's actually real. And at the end of the day, the bigger question, my issue with you is not your beard, right? As much as you want to make it about my beard.

My issue with you is that you are out here writing policy that you know is stupid. That's the thing. You know the tariff war is stupid. You know the Iran war is stupid. You know it. You know you look at that guy on the other side in the White House and be like, damn, what's a fool going to do today?

And then you go out there, face a bunch of cameras, and defend policy you know to be stupid that's hurting all kinds of people in my state and yours. And then you try to act the tough guy because you can't be a tough guy to the actual boss because you're afraid of him even though he's like, I don't know. I mean, you've seen him.

REPORTER: I see you, man. You're calling him out. You're calling him out. All right, man. Well, thank you. Thank you very much. I appreciate it.
