"It's counterproductive," Bevan said. "It turns the press into a victim instead of what they are. Don't turn around and help them by making them be able to portray themselves as this champion of the First Amendment, champion of free speech."

"I don't know if it's a friendship," Bevan quipped. "He will bash someone's head in, metaphorically speaking, one day and then the next day invite him to ride on Air Force One to go somewhere."

The hosts debated whether a new U.S.-Greenland agreement giving Washington expanded long-term access and influence over foreign investment represents a real Trump victory -- even if it falls short of ownership -- or simply a compromise.

"If Trump can't have it all and buy it or take it over, this is about as good as it's going to get," said Bevan.

"I think it's a triumph for good old diplomacy," Cannon added. "They finally figured out the language that would make everybody happy."
