“... But all this was merely an appearance. In reality, there is no Russian culture in the Soviet Union. What exists there now is Jewish culture adapted to the concerns of the Russian people. The entire spiritual life there is in Jewish hands, and they direct it. They teach the Russian people to think in a Jewish manner and to live in the spiritual atmosphere that they create for them. For the theater, music, literature, science; all of these are in Jewish hands. These are not our malicious assertions, but admissions made by the Jews themselves... This is how matters stand with Russian culture in the U.S.S.R. All Jews, while the Russian people stand aside. They are in the position of an inferior race. The Jews hold in their hands not only the political but also the cultural leadership of the Russian people. The cultural level of the Jews in the U.S.S.R. is considerably higher than that of the Russian people. As early as 1926, literacy among Jews in the Soviet Union was 71.8 percent, while among Russians it was 40 percent. If the statistics of higher education are considered, the percentage of Jews relative to their total population greatly exceeds the percentage of Russians. Besides the fact that Jews create “Russian” literature, there are many among them who write in the Jewish language, such as Peretz, Markish, David Gorshwein, Itzik, Ferrer, S. Halkin, and others. The Jewish scholar Moses Gasper, returning from the U.S.S.R. to England, declared: “I do not fear for the Judaism of the Russian Jews. It has penetrated deeply into them, more deeply than anywhere else in the world.” The bearers of the old Russian culture, the Russian classics, musicians and writers are sometimes mentioned. But that is the past, while the present, the continuation of that past, is already colored by strong Jewish tones. And the Russian people are becoming accustomed to viewing this Jewish culture as the natural evolution of Russian culture. There is, therefore, no Russian culture in the U.S.S.R. There exists only Soviet culture. And what Soviet culture is can be clearly seen from the facts presented above. Soviet culture is a Jewish monument standing on the grave of Russian culture."
