Is Teaching Linux instead of Windows to kids in school is a viable option?

I was taught in school using Windows and also told that it was a OS and not a kernel. And I think whenever a school teaches using something that's paid that is a bad idea cause it makes a bad monopoly. Teaching linux to kids is a viable option for them to learn computers as they don't have any baggage learning of windows and they would understand much better don't you think.

And I know kids will type shit like "rm -rf /" if you don't know it removes everything from your computer, then simply don't give them the sudo password. I want to know what do you think?

The Boldest Thing I've Done with Linux (Not Clickbait)

TLDR: Used a projector; it worked.

I installed Linux on my computer around December last year.

Mint was the obvious choice, because it was the first one I heard about.

And because I'm currently at school, I installed it on my laptop, not my desktop, which in highlight is ridiculous, especially after having to dual boot with Windows, which I believe is a recipe for a bad time.

Anyways, Presentation Day, all of us had done a combined shit job of this project, C- territory. I'm forced to use my laptop and connect it to the projector in front of a real life client that this was supposed to be for and present a slide deck.

I was shitting myself as I plug in the HDMI.

It flickered a bit - goes to desktop - my prof remarks "Nice wallpaper"

I say thank you. I feel good.

But then the screen isn't duplicating but extending and I begin sweating profusely. I take a deep breath, hit the hotkey

It works and the presentation goes fine.

TLDR: Used a projector. Survived

P.S. Pic is wallpaper before you ask. Simon Stalenhag.

Flatpak 2.0 seems to depend on systemd

https://transfem.social/notes/amkk9ypcps9a002q

Basically when Jorge Castro was asked for clarification on if flatpak 2.0 will be depended on systemd his response was "Are you serious? Of course."

Which even though I use systemd distros myself seems like a bit of a problematic stance to me, especially after it seems like the same response Linux user would get while talking about software support

But I am also interested to see what you all think

ARM64 Ubuntu on Apple SIlicon Macs through Parallels - anybody else?

Currently trying out Ubuntu 26.04 LTS on my Apple SIlicon Mac through Parallels, the ARM64 version, and was wondering if anybody else has tried this?

And if so, what was the experience like? What worked, and what didn't work?

I'm very new to Linux in general, and just wanted to get more familiar with it, and thought this was a quick and simple way to try it out.

What’s the most unexpectedly useful Linux command you learned way too late?

Not necessarily the most advanced one. Just something that made you go “wait… this would’ve saved me so much time.”

Mine was honestly learning how much easier life gets once you properly start chaining simple commands together instead of doing everything manually.

Requesting suggestions for a well-supported distro for an ancient HP Mini, Intel Atom, 2GB of RAM

I'll delete this if I'm in the wrong sub.

I'm going to try Mint 22.3 XFCE as a character building exercise (as if the other specs weren't sad enough, the little box has a 120GB 5400 rpm HDD).

If it runs "good enough" on the above, I'll throw a cheap little SSD in it and install whatever you guys suggest.

TIA!

WebGPU for client side browser inference on Linux

Has anyone tinkered around with trying to run small models in the browser. Have been super blown away by the performance, but I’m having a tough time getting it to play nice on Linux

Not 100% an expert in this but I do know there’s spotty support for Vulkan drivers with webgpu. Specifically fp16 shaders don’t work even if they are enabled on my gpu.

Anyone have any experience here?

Do you think Linux actually is adherent to Unix philosophy?

I've read a comment recently saying (I'm paraphrasing here): “The Linux approach of isolating different components, which are all part of the OS function, is the outlier among Unix-based systems.”

That got me thinking about the whole idea that Linux adheres to the Unix philosophy. It kind of reminds me of how some religious groups are so literalist or so spiritual that they miss the mark entirely on what the original messages of their faith are all about.

Also, just for fun, Linux is diverse, so if you agree or disagree with the quoted comment, do you think there are certain distros that are more Unix-like than others?

Linux on lenovo legion slim 5?

Bought this laptop when it released but ended up finding myself using it more for productivity than actual gaming and it’s been great. However being a gaming laptop the battery life is abyssal not really wanting to buy a more practical laptop would installing linux help maybe allowing me to use integrated graphics instead of the 4060 to reduce power consumption?
