The eye’s pupil
Now I always get a little lost with this one, so bear with.
The eye’s pupil seemingly got its name from the fact that from certain angles, in the right light, the observer can see a tiny reflection of him or herself in it.
Pupil shares the same root as pupa, or puppy - a tiny version of something (this is crap wording I know.) And of course the pupil in a school is a version of the grown-up, not yet fully developed.
Couple of my other anatomical favourites. The triangular bone at the base of the spine was thought to house the person’s soul - hence os sacrum \- sacred bone.
And my favourite, which bears repeating (well, I think so) is the acetabulum, the ‘socket’ part of the hip ball-and-socket joint, in the pelvis. An acetabulum was also a small bowl used to hold dipping vinegar, otherwise known as acetic acid.
