⚡️ PhD Opportunity: Integrated Photonic-Spintronic Devices — EPFL

📍 Location: Lausanne, Switzerland 🇨🇭

🏛 Department: Hybrid Photonics Laboratory (Swiss-French collaboration with IEMN Lille)

📅 Duration: 1 year (renewable), start date October 1, 2026

🔬 About the Project
This PhD project explores hybrid photonic-spintronic chips on silicon nitride to generate high-quality electronic signals at frequencies beyond 100 GHz — pushing into the terahertz range (100 GHz to 10 THz). Leveraging an integrated photonic platform with ultra-low loss and high optical nonlinearity, you'll help develop compact, efficient sources of pulsed and continuous-wave terahertz radiation. The work spans experimental setup design (optics, high-frequency electronics, custom mechanics) and theoretical development of millimeterwave/terahertz generation inside photonic chips — shaping a new frontier in photonics-based millimeterwave-optical technology.

🧑‍🔬 Ideal Candidate
- Physics background with strong interest in high-frequency electronics, integrated photonics, and nonlinear optics
- Interest in metrology and/or electro-optic transduction
- Familiarity with (or willingness to learn) Python, Matlab, LabVIEW, Inventor, Illustrator, CST Microwave Studio, and COMSOL
- Hands-on, problem-solving mindset with enthusiasm for building experiments from scratch
- Collaborative spirit and readiness to take a leading junior role in international teams

وی افزود: یکی از مشکلات مهم در سال‌های اخیر کمبود ردیف‌های استخدامی بود که از سال ۱۳۹۹ باقی مانده بود. با همکاری سازمان اداری و استخدامی کشور، بخش عمده این مشکل برطرف شده و تقریباً تمامی ردیف‌های مورد نیاز تامین شده است که به‌زودی به دانشگاه‌ها ابلاغ خواهد شد.

✨ We are recruiting a doctoral student in physics to work on nanoscale X-ray diffraction (XRD) for imaging ferroelectric domain dynamics.

🔎 This project will develop advanced XRD methods to study how domains evolve and switch in ferroelectric materials, an area with strong relevance for future technologies in memory, computing and functional devices.

🔬 The successful candidate will work at the intersection of materials physics, synchrotron science and instrumentation development, making use of the unique capabilities of the NanoMAX beamline at MAX IV, the world’s first fourth-generation synchrotron.

🔎 Two of my favorite optics facts to tell people are that 1) your eyes form upside-down images on your retinas and your brain "flips" the images, and 2) experiments showed that you could stop that "flipping"

😵‍💫 I've always had the sneaking suspicion that these vision-flipping experiments seem more like urban legends than true scientific fact though

🤓 From what I can find online, it seems that they truly did cause people to see things upside-down, but are any of you more familiar with the history of this?
