Shabana Mahmood has proposed creating new “safe routes” into the UK, primarily for Palestinians, as well as Afghan women and girls.
She says the scheme would reflect the generosity inherent in this country. But Conservative Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp has criticised the proposal, promising that if the Tories win the next general election, the scheme would be scrapped immediately.
He has also pledged to set up a dedicated removals force that would deport up to 150,000 people a year who have no right to remain in the UK, including illegal migrants, foreign criminals and people who have overstayed their visas.
The Conservatives have already had their chance in government, yet they failed to get to grips with the migration problem. So why should people trust them now? At the same time, Mahmood’s proposal is clearly controversial. But where do you stand on the issue?
