Enlightened Self-Interest Is NOT Christian Morality
Many conservative Christians today treat "enlightened self-interest" as if it were a biblical commandment. They claim that pure capitalism, driven by self-interest, miraculously turns private vice into public virtue. But this idea is completely foreign to the Gospel. Our Lord did not say “Love your neighbor as you love your own profit.”
He said “Love your neighbor as yourself” — and then showed us what that looks like by emptying Himself on the Cross. The article dismantles the myth that ruthless self-interest (even the “enlightened” kind) can be baptized and called Christian. It contrasts the spirit of modern Americanism with the actual moral vision of the Church Fathers, the Saints, and Holy Scripture:
Leaving portions of the harvest for the poor (not because it was profitable)
The command to look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others
The radical generosity of the early Church and the Saints
True Christian economics is not built on calculated selfishness. It is built on self-emptying love, solidarity, and communion. This is a much-needed correction for Christians who have absorbed too much of the spirit of the age. Read the full article here:
