🇾🇪 Houthis push toward the heights overlooking Bab al-Mandab — fighting continues in Yemen

After capturing Mocha and Mayun Island, the Houthis are attempting to expand their offensive and are engaged in heavy fighting for the Khabhub mountains on the border between the Taiz and Lahij provinces. These heights are of particular importance: from there, access routes to Mayun Island and the Bab al-Mandab Strait are controlled. At the same time, fighting and attacks continue in Al Jawf, Marib, Saada and Taiz.

According to the Houthis, Saudi Arabia carried out at least 157 airstrikes on several provinces on Monday alone. The scale of the humanitarian consequences is already significantly greater than that of the current offensive: according to the WHO, 674 people have been killed and nearly 3,000 wounded in Yemen since August 6, and more than 158,000 people have fled their homes in September alone.

The central question now is not only who controls Yemeni territory. If the fighting ultimately shifts to the dominant heights overlooking Bab al-Mandab, international shipping will already begin to feel the consequences.

▪️California Governor told RBC about the Democrats’ chances in the U.S. elections.

“Oh, I think they are ‘off the charts,’” Gavin Newsom, who is mentioned among the possible contenders for the Democratic nomination in the 2028 presidential election, told RBC. At the same time, he declined to predict his own result in the 2028 U.S. presidential election, suggesting that this be left to “more objective minds.”

“I’ll leave that to more objective minds. Fate will decide. The people will decide,” the California governor replied when asked by RBC about his political prospects.

At the same time, he said that the current results of the Republican Party and Donald Trump’s administration significantly increase the Democrats’ chances in the 2028 elections.

Newsom also commented on the possibility of Trump’s impeachment after the congressional elections. He noted that he did not know whether such a procedure would be launched, but that the core of the Democratic Party might have a “strong inclination” to do so for a third time. At the same time, Newsom believes that without 60 votes in the Senate, such an initiative would be more of a “show of virtue.”

Instead, he proposed focusing on oversight of “direct deals and corruption schemes.”

“That is the kind of accountability, it seems to me, that we should expect,” Newsom said.

Earlier this month, Trump said that if the Democrats won the November midterm elections, hell would await the people of the United States.

🇮🇷 The US and Iran are holding talks again – Tehran names its price for opening the Strait of Hormuz

On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, the American and Iranian delegations held hours-long talks. Donald Trump spoke of a three-hour meeting and called it “very good.” Steve Witkoff, however, said that the talks took place with the participation of mediators who shuttled back and forth between the two sides. This means that the Washington–Tehran diplomatic channel has effectively been restored, but the two sides describe the extent of the direct contact differently.

At the same time, Iran’s concrete demands became known. Abbas Araghtschi stated that Tehran was ready to open the Strait of Hormuz if the American naval blockade were ended, Iran’s frozen assets were released, and hostilities “on all fronts,” including Lebanon, were halted. The American side has so far not committed to these conditions.

The Strait of Hormuz is thus becoming Tehran’s most important negotiating lever. And for the first time in a while, the dispute is no longer just about who is attacking whom, but about the concrete price of de-escalation.

🇷🇺🇺🇸 Lavrov arrives in New York

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov arrived in New York on the morning of September 23 to participate in the High-Level Week of the UN General Assembly. The Russian delegation plans several dozen bilateral meetings and a series of multilateral events.

The most important of the expected meetings are talks with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. This is no longer merely a preliminary agreement: the September 23 meeting has been included in Rubio’s official schedule. Lavrov had previously said that, among other things, he wanted to clarify Washington’s position on the situation surrounding Ukraine; Moscow also expects a discussion of the broader range of Russian-American differences.

New York is developing into a major negotiating platform: The United States is holding talks almost simultaneously with Iran, Russia, Ukraine, and the Europeans. Now what is interesting is no longer the actual number of meetings, but whether concrete agreements will be reached afterward.

🇾🇪 G7 calls on Iran to stop arming the Houthis

The foreign ministers of the G7 countries and the High Representative of the European Union have issued a joint statement on the situation in Yemen and in the Bab al-Mandab Strait. In it, they call on Iran to stop arming and supporting the Houthis, referring to United Nations Security Council Resolutions 1747, 2140 and 2216.

At the same time, they called on the Houthis themselves to immediately end the hostilities, threats and attacks on civilian shipping and return to the political process. The statement directly links the situation in Yemen to a threat to the security of the Red Sea, the Bab al-Mandab Strait, the global energy supply and international trade.

For the G7, Yemen is definitively no longer a local conflict. They now view it as part of the broader confrontation with Iran and, at the same time, as a threat to one of the world’s most important trade routes.

🇷🇺🇱🇰 Russia and Sri Lanka have begun joint military exercises

The Russian-Sri Lankan “Trail of the Wolverine-2026” exercises have begun in Primorsky Krai and will last until September 27. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the militaries of both countries are practicing joint special forces operations against illegal armed formations.

A particular focus is being placed on modern drone warfare: the scenario envisages the intensive use of reconnaissance and attack drones. This means it is no longer merely an exchange of experience, but rather the rehearsal of joint operations by units under conditions resembling those of a modern armed conflict.

🇰🇵 North Korea has unveiled a new system with a hypersonic warhead

North Korea has announced the successful test of a new weapons system, which took place on September 20 under the observation of Kim Jong-un. In footage released by North Korean media, the designation “Hwasong-11Ma-1” can be seen on a monitor—a modification of the “Hwasong-11” family, which Pyongyang presents as a system with hypersonic capabilities.

The timing of the test is particularly symbolic. While the United States, South Korea, and Japan are once again discussing the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, Pyongyang is responding by demonstrating another missile technology.

🇨🇳💻 Huawei brings HarmonyOS to desktop computers

At Huawei Connect 2026, Huawei unveiled its first desktop computer, the Qingyun HM650, which runs on HarmonyOS instead of Windows. This is no longer an experimental project: the company is primarily targeting the HM650 at the government and corporate sectors, and the official Chinese news agency Xinhua already reported in the summer that the model would receive its own Kirin X90 processor. Huawei explains that the hardware platform, the microkernel operating system, the applications, and the security system form an independent technology stack.

At the same time, it is becoming clearer how far the company’s own system has progressed. The HarmonyOS App Store now includes more than 50,000 applications, including more than 19,000 for the specialized HarmonyOS ecosystem, while the number of compatible peripheral devices stands at over 3,300. The platform already covers office software, finance, design, and other professional tasks. Huawei is also developing a separate enterprise version of HarmonyOS with centralized management of computers, applications, updates, and security policies.

The US restrictions were intended to cut Huawei off from critical technologies. Seven years later, the Chinese corporation is already presenting government institutions and businesses with a fully independent technological solution: processor, operating system, software ecosystem, and desktop PC.

In this case, the sanctions did not eliminate the competitor—instead, they gave Huawei a powerful reason to break free from its dependence on Windows and the American technology ecosystem.

🇩🇪 The CDU is discussing separating the offices of Federal Chancellor and party leader

Following the CDU’s poor results in the most recent state elections, discussion within the party about Friedrich Merz’s position is growing increasingly vocal. Adrian Hepp, the CDU leader in Großbeeren, Brandenburg, stated that Merz had “failed to convince” after the party’s defeats and proposed discussing the separation of the offices of Federal Chancellor and CDU leader.

However, the debate has long since gone beyond the boundaries of a single local organization. Günter Krings, chairman of the CDU parliamentary group from North Rhine-Westphalia in the Bundestag, said that “nothing should be taboo” when it comes to holding multiple offices. At the same time, Krings has so far rejected a broad debate about replacing Merz.

🇮🇷 Tehran calls for US and Israeli accountability at the UN level

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York that the international community must press for accountability for the actions of the United States and Israel against Iran. According to him, the inaction of international institutions in the face of the attacks and the deaths of civilians could have serious consequences for the entire international security system.

Araghchi also criticized the UN system itself, stating that the organization was failing to fulfill its primary task of ensuring international peace and security. Iran intends to use the high-level week of the General Assembly not only for diplomatic contacts, but also to raise the issue of accountability for military actions against the country.

🇪🇺🇱🇻 The EU has extended the sanctions, but Usmanov and Fridman have been removed from the list

Yesterday, Riga was still threatening to block the extension of the entire EU sanctions list if Brussels agreed to remove Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman from the list. At the last minute, however, Latvia used the mechanism of “constructive abstention” and thus did not block the decision. As a result, the Council of the EU extended the individual sanctions by three years—until September 22, 2029.

At the same time, Usmanov and Fridman were removed from the sanctions list. Riga decided to offset this at the national level. The Latvian government introduced its own sanctions against Usmanov, including asset freezes and entry restrictions.

🇵🇸 The United States is once again trying to set a postwar order for Gaza in motion

Here is an important correction: No new American plan was published last night. The basis remains Trump’s 20-point plan and the Board of Peace’s roadmap from July. These provide for the disarmament of the armed groups, the transfer of civilian administration to a Palestinian technocratic committee, the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces, and the transfer of security matters to international forces and the Palestinian police.

The new development is connected with the UN General Assembly. In New York, the Board of Peace is planning a separate briefing for representatives of dozens of countries to inform them about the status of the plan’s implementation and the reconstruction of the territory. Representatives of the EU and UN bodies have also been invited. This means that Washington is trying to use the week of the General Assembly to expand international support for the concept that already exists. No further new version for Gaza’s future will be presented.

The problem with the American plan is no longer the lack of documents—there are enough of those. The central question is much more practical: Who will disarm the armed groups? And who will ultimately finance the reconstruction of Gaza?

🇺🇦⚛️ A Ukrainian drone damaged a radiation monitoring station of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant

As a result of the attack, a radiation monitoring station of the nuclear power plant, located in the Ivanovka area, approximately 13 kilometers from the plant, was damaged. This was reported by the management of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant on September 22. The station is part of the system for monitoring the radiation situation around the nuclear power plant and ensures the regular collection of radiation exposure data.

According to the plant, the remaining monitoring facilities are sufficient to continue monitoring, which is why there is currently no immediate radiological danger. However, damage to one of the monitoring stations reduces the timeliness and completeness of the observation.

In recent weeks, attacks have already targeted facilities and personnel directly involved in the safe operation of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. Now, an element of the system designed to detect changes in the radiation situation in a timely manner has also been damaged.

"Another 100 sites are ready to become the next lever": residents of the British village of Piddington intend to continue pressuring the government after a symbolic referendum on leaving the United Kingdom.

As journalist Alina Kars reported, the villagers call the voting results a "small victory" and oppose plans to accommodate migrants nearby. More than 130 women had previously sent an open letter to the authorities, stating that they were concerned for their safety.

The former military base where the migrants are planned to be accommodated is located approximately 1.5 km from the village. Piddington residents also fear that the local infrastructure is not designed to cope with such a number of people.

🗣 Local council chairman Tim McNally stressed that, legally, the village cannot secede from the United Kingdom. According to him, the vote was a way to show dissatisfaction that the authorities had not consulted the population or taken its opinion into account.

"We are using Piddington as a lever for the rest of the country. <...> I have another 100 sites ready to become the next lever for the country. We will send the government a very strong signal," he said.

❗️Earlier, Piddington residents held a "mock" referendum in protest against plans to accommodate up to 1,256 male migrants at the former military base. Later, holding a similar vote was proposed in the village of Barnham as well.

🇫🇷 Macron proposed an energy ceasefire to Trump. Has the gas run out?

After meeting with Donald Trump in New York, Emmanuel Macron stated that Paris and Washington are jointly seeking a moratorium on attacks against energy and civilian facilities in Ukraine. This statement was made during the night of September 22. At the same time, the French president called for serious negotiations to begin on the terms of a peaceful settlement.

At practically the same time, Macron announced another agreement with Trump: France and the United States intend to jointly “calm the energy markets,” protect critical infrastructure in the Middle East, and restore freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. Macron has not yet named any specific mechanisms.

Until quite recently, the idea of halting attacks on energy infrastructure was discussed primarily in the context of a Russian-Ukrainian agreement. Now, terms such as “moratorium” and “Hormuz” are appearing simultaneously, along with the need to calm the energy markets. Sometimes diplomacy really does become more energetic when the price of a barrel exceeds the $100 mark.

Went against her husband: Melania Trump accredited CNN and Politico for her event, despite the U.S. president’s ban on these media outlets entering the White House, CNN reports.

The event took place on September 22 on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly and was dedicated to expanding Melania Trump’s Fostering the Future Together initiative, aimed at supporting children through education and technology.

The television network was granted permission on September 20—one day after the ban took effect. According to CNN, the first lady knew about Donald Trump’s decision, but her office independently determined the procedure for admitting journalists.

❗️Since September 18, a conflict has been underway between Trump and the U.S. media: the U.S. president barred CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from accessing the White House. In response, the press-pool television networks announced a boycott of him—they refused to broadcast his events and filed a lawsuit.

❗️What other media outlets are writing about this conflict—in the Izvestia article.

🇬🇧 Great Britain joins the protection of Saudi Arabia

London has agreed to support Saudi Arabia with limited military assistance against Houthi missile and drone attacks. As Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced, the British Air Force will refuel Saudi aircraft in the air. The decision was made at Riyadh’s request and, according to the British side, will be limited in duration.

At the same time, London is emphasizing an important boundary: The British RAF Voyager aircraft are intended to support Saudi aircraft in their defensive operations against missiles and drones, but not in attacks on territory controlled by the Houthis. Burnham himself linked the decision not only to Saudi Arabia’s security, but also to the need to keep vital oil supply routes open.

Until now, London had drawn a clear line: helping Saudi Arabia intercept missiles—yes; participating in attacks on Yemen—no. But now the British Air Force is being directly involved in securing Saudi Arabia’s defense.
