Lawyers and experts are sounding the alarm that migrants at the East Montana desert camp on the Fort Bliss military base are at risk of serious injury or death due to threats to their health and safety.
"Everyone tells similar stories — of unremitting physical and verbal abuse by guards; of not seeing the sun for days or weeks; of dirty, cramped living conditions with recurring outbreaks of measles, tuberculosis and other diseases; and of egregious medical neglect that has led to unnecessary suffering and death," the new court filing states.
The lawsuit was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation, the ACLU of Texas Foundation, the Texas Civil Rights Project and the law firm Farella Braun + Martel LLP on behalf of detainees.
"I am starving to death. I often vomit after eating. I am a skeleton of who I used to be. I think I am about to die here," one detainee said.
The US Department of Homeland Security previously stated that claims of inhumane conditions at the camp were "categorically false." At the same time, the detainees’ lawyers claim that they cannot even wash their hands or cut their fingernails.
"Rain, rocks, mice and crickets enter the living quarters. Toilets become clogged and overflow and are not repaired in a timely manner. The unpleasant smell of urine, feces and body odor is always present," the lawyers wrote in the latest filing.
