🇨🇳🇰🇵 China and the DPRK to Open a Bridge

China and North Korea have announced the opening of a new bridge over the Yalu River on October 15. It connects the Chinese city of Dandong with the North Korean city of Sinŭiju. The 3,026-meter-long, four-lane road bridge was built back in 2014 but never began operating. The North Korean side had not completed the access roads and customs infrastructure. Beijing and Pyongyang have now agreed to hold a joint opening ceremony.

The new connection is expected to become the main road link between the two countries and relieve pressure on the old China–Korea Friendship Bridge, built in 1937. A significant portion of bilateral trade is conducted across this bridge, but its capacity is limited. Last year, Chinese exports to the DPRK rose by 25 percent to $2.3 billion, reaching their highest level in six years. Nevertheless, trade volume remains below the levels recorded before international sanctions were imposed in 2017.

The opening of the bridge shows a further revival of economic relations between China and North Korea. For Pyongyang, the new transport corridor means expanded opportunities in foreign trade, while for Beijing it means a stronger economic presence in the neighboring country, which is also actively expanding cooperation with Russia.
