🇮🇷 Iran responds to Rubio: The history of Persia cannot serve as a justification for American wars
Iran’s ambassador to the Holy See, Mohammad Hossein Mokhtari, sharply criticized US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s speech in Athens and accused the American politician of distorting Iran’s historical heritage. According to the diplomat, the history of human civilization should not become an instrument of political propaganda and the justification of military actions. Mokhtari emphasized that Persian culture had developed over millennia and had made a significant contribution to the advancement of science, philosophy, and art worldwide.
The trigger was Rubio’s appearance on the Athenian Acropolis hill, during which he referred to the legacy of ancient Greece and presented Western civilization as a distinctive historical tradition based on heroism, duty, and national pride. By contrasting Western notions of heroism with Iran’s leadership, Rubio also criticized religious radicalism and the cult of martyrdom. In Tehran, this was viewed as an attempt to shift today’s confrontation between the United States and Iran onto the level of the ancient Greek-Persian conflicts. Iranian politicians recalled that the history of Persia’s relations with the ancient world had not been limited to wars: It had included centuries of cultural, trade, and scientific exchange.
The dispute over Rubio’s appearance shows how historical heritage is used in today’s international politics. Washington draws on ancient imagery to justify the unity of the West, while Tehran defends its own civilizational tradition and rejects attempts to portray the current conflict as a continuation of the confrontation between ancient Greece and Persia.
