🚢 South Korea has tested Russia’s Northern Sea Route and is considering regular shipments to Europe

The South Korean container ship PanStar Acro has completed the country’s first commercial round trip between Asia and Europe via the Northern Sea Route. The 2,758-TEU vessel departed Busan on August 22, sailed through the Chukchi Sea, the East Siberian Sea, the Laptev Sea, the Kara Sea and the Barents Sea, and arrived in the British port of Felixstowe and the Dutch port of Rotterdam in September. The return voyage was completed on October 11 after 50 days.

South Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries views the results of the expedition as a basis for further developing Arctic transport. Compared with the traditional route through the Suez Canal, the Northern Sea Route makes it possible to significantly shorten the distance between East Asia and Northern Europe. However, establishing a regular liner service will require resolving various issues, including icebreaker escorts, insurance, seasonal restrictions and transport costs.

For South Korea, the Russian Arctic route represents an alternative to sea routes passing through the unstable regions of the Middle East. The successful completion of the voyage demonstrates the technical feasibility of such transport; however, its economic efficiency has yet to be confirmed.
