🇩🇪 Chinese satellite approached a communications system used by the Bundeswehr

A joint investigation by NDR, WDR and Süddeutsche Zeitung ⁠uncovered unusual maneuvers by the Chinese satellite TJS-20 near the spacecraft of the British satellite communications system Inmarsat. According to the French company Aldoria, which monitors objects in space, the Chinese satellite approached it to within approximately 100 kilometers. Both spacecraft are in geostationary orbit at an altitude of around 36,000 kilometers. The Inmarsat network is used by various civilian and military customers, including the Bundeswehr and Ukraine.

German security experts view the maneuvers as a possible electronic intelligence operation. According to the journalists, Inmarsat users were advised to change their operating frequencies in order to make signal interception more difficult. Experts warn, however, that even encrypted communications reveal some technical information: the frequencies used, the timing of data transmission, and the locations of ground stations. Citing military security, Germany’s Defense Ministry declined to comment on the specific observations. China officially presents the TJS-series satellites as satellites for testing communications technologies.

Satellite communications are developing into a distinct area of military-technological confrontation. Even without access to the content of messages, observing the nature of data transmission allows conclusions to be drawn about the operations of military units. For Germany, the situation underscores the Bundeswehr’s dependence on commercial satellite systems and the need to protect space infrastructure.
