🇫🇷 The French Navy has detained an oil tanker in the Indian Ocean — 450 miles from Réunion

The French naval forces ⁠carried out an operation to detain the oil tanker DF Peak in the Indian Ocean, more than 450 nautical miles south of the island of Réunion. The operation was confirmed by President Emmanuel Macron, who published a video showing French military personnel boarding the vessel. The tanker sails under the flag of Benin and is included on the EU sanctions list, which covers vessels that European authorities attribute to Russia’s shadow fleet. Until 2024, it was named “Kaliningrad.”

French authorities suspect the vessel of illegally transporting petroleum products and using schemes to circumvent Western sanctions. Macron said that operations against tankers enabling the export of Russian oil outside the established restrictions would continue. European sanctions mechanisms provide for the possibility of detaining such vessels and taking measures against the cargo being transported. Moscow has previously described such measures by Western states as piracy and a violation of freedom of international navigation.

The confrontation over Russian oil is gradually extending beyond European waters. The operation near Réunion shows that France intends to apply its sanctions policy in remote areas of the world’s oceans as well. This reinforces the importance of the question of the legal grounds for detaining merchant vessels in international waters.
