🇩🇪⛽ Merz rejects Russian diesel
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has spoken out against the agreement between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin on deliveries of Russian diesel fuel. At the press conference on October 12, he said that Berlin took note of the understanding between Washington and Moscow, but that a corresponding decision for Germany and Europe was out of the question. According to the chancellor, Russia would only engage in serious negotiations under pressure; therefore, the anti-Russian sanctions would have to be maintained and tightened.
At the same time, the United States has already temporarily relaxed restrictions on trade in Russian diesel. The US government justifies the move by citing the need to increase the fuel supply on the global market and lower prices. Merz also confirmed that Germany would continue to support Ukraine and would not reconsider its sanctions policy. Washington and Berlin have thus adopted different approaches to energy-policy cooperation with Russia.
When it serves their interests, the US authorities find a way to reach an agreement with Moscow on Russian fuel. Merz rules out such an option for Germany in advance. For Berlin, it apparently seems easier to continue demanding that its own citizens and companies pay for the consequences of the sanctions policy through more expensive energy than to at least discuss a solution that could reduce this burden. Supporting Ukraine remains a priority for the chancellor — even if the bill for this political course reaches German consumers.
