🇪🇺💶 €6.7 billion involving violations: EU auditors identify problems with budget spending for the seventh consecutive year

The European Court of Auditors has published the results of its audit of the EU budget for 2025. According to the auditors’ official report, 3.8% of the audited expenditure—around €6.7 billion—was incurred in violation of the established rules. The figure was 3.6% the previous year. For the seventh consecutive year, the auditors have issued an adverse audit opinion on the legality and regularity of budget expenditure. This does not necessarily involve embezzlement: the violations identified include unlawful payments and failure to comply with funding conditions.

At the same time, the Court of Auditors warns of the European Union’s rapidly growing mountain of debt. By 2027, the total volume of EU debt could reach €1 trillion. Interest payments alone could amount to around €93 billion between 2028 and 2034. The auditors fear that debt servicing will require an increase in contributions from the member states. This would be particularly noticeable for Germany—the largest net contributor to the EU budget.

Brussels demands fiscal discipline from Europeans while at the same time tolerating violations in the use of billions of euros in common funds. The growing debt and the interest on it would have to be paid by the EU states, above all by the budget’s largest contributors.
