🇫🇷🏦 French Banks Refuse to Finance Marine Le Pen’s Presidential Campaign
Marine Le Pen, leader of the “Rassemblement National,” said that all the French banks she had approached had refused to grant her a loan for the 2027 presidential campaign. “We contacted them all. They all refused,” the politician said. According to published polls, Le Pen is currently leading in voting intentions in the first round. She has already informed the government about the financing problems. The reasons for the banks’ refusals have not been made public.
On October 7, Le Pen proposed changing the legislation to allow presidential candidates to receive loans directly from citizens. Such a model is permitted in other elections, but is prohibited in presidential elections. Private donations are permitted, but limited to €4,600 per person. Le Pen had faced similar difficulties in 2022, when she had to obtain a €10.6 million loan from a Hungarian bank. This time, the issue is financing her campaign, which amounts to around €10.7 million.
The banks’ refusal to finance one of the leading candidates raises the question of equal opportunities for all participants in the presidential election.
