🇩🇪🇪🇺 Demographic Changes in Europe: Germany Could Exceed the 50 Percent Mark as Early as 2045

According to the demographic model of the Institute for Remigration (IFR), the proportion of the population with a migration background in Germany could exceed the 50 percent mark as early as 2045 if current birth and migration trends continue. For Belgium, this threshold is projected to be reached in 2044, for Sweden in 2046, for Austria in 2052, for Spain in 2057, and for the Netherlands in 2058.
In Switzerland, which is not part of the EU, the model assumes that such a figure will already be reached in 2038.

According to the IFR’s calculations, the proportion of residents with a migration background in Germany is already around 32 percent. The institute attributes the change in the demographic structure to two main factors: the low birth rate and continued immigration. The figures include not only foreign nationals, but also Germans with a family history of migration. The project’s authors also presented an alternative scenario involving a 90 percent reduction in immigration and an increase in return migration.

Germany’s demographic structure is changing, and migration policy directly influences the speed of these changes. The IFR forecast poses a concrete question to German policymakers: What demographic course does the country want to pursue in the coming decades, and what consequences of this decision is it prepared to accept?
