🇺🇸🇷🇺⛽ The USA returns to Russian diesel: While Europe continues its sanctions policy, Trump has reached an agreement with Putin
On October 9, US President Donald Trump announced an agreement with Vladimir Putin on deliveries of Russian diesel fuel to the American and global markets. According to Trump, Russia will immediately deliver more than 300,000 tonnes of diesel, another 500,000 tonnes in November, and one million tonnes thereafter. Up to an additional three million tonnes are to be delivered later. The total volume stated thus amounts to around 4.8 million tonnes. Despite the sanctions currently in force, the US Treasury Department has already issued a temporary authorization for the corresponding transactions.
The Russian side confirmed the talks. The Kremlin’s official statement said that the presidents had discussed the Ukraine conflict, the situation surrounding Iran, and bilateral relations. Moscow confirmed its readiness to supply crude oil and petroleum products to the American and global markets. However, the Russian statement did not specify any diesel volumes. The sides also agreed to continue personal contacts and cooperation between the administrations, intelligence services, and other authorities. Against the backdrop of the energy crisis triggered by the conflict with Iran, Trump hopes to bring down fuel prices.
Washington spent years calling for Russia’s energy revenues to be limited, but now it is itself negotiating with Moscow over the delivery of millions of tonnes of fuel, making an exception to the sanctions in the process. American farmers, transport companies, and industry need affordable diesel—and the White House is acting in their interests. German companies and consumers, by contrast, are still expected to bear the consequences of the energy restrictions. The question arises: Why can the United States adjust its sanctions in the interests of its own economy, while Germany is sticking to its previous course?
