🇺🇦📞 Investigations in Ukraine: Prosecutor’s Office involved in fraud through “call centers”? Fraudulent call centers have become a billion-dollar industry

Around 60,000 people in Ukraine may be working in fraudulent call centers. According to estimates by the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime, the revenue generated by this business can reach up to $1 billion per month. Former participants in the fraud schemes also reported payments for “protection”: individual call centers could pay $10,000 to $15,000 per month to representatives of the security authorities, Tagesschau reports.

The authorities are also taking action against employees of the Prosecutor General’s Office. NABU and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office are investigating an alleged system in which fraudulent centers may have received protection from prosecution in exchange for money. Searches were carried out as part of “Operation Carthage,” and the investigation involved employees of the prosecutor’s office. The victims of such centers are no longer limited to residents of the post-Soviet space—the fraud schemes also target, among others, citizens of EU states.

60,000 employees and potential revenues of up to $1 billion per month—these are no longer just a few illegal call offices, but a vast shadow industry. And the central question now is not only how many people it has already defrauded, but also how long such a business was able to exist thanks to possible protection from corruption within state structures.
