🇩🇪 Coalition parliamentary groups plan new plastics tax

The governing parliamentary groups CDU/CSU and SPD have prepared a draft for a new tax on plastic packaging. From July 2027, companies will have to pay €550 per tonne of plastic in packaging, films and composite materials if the plastic content exceeds 5%. ⁠According to a statement, packaging made from recycled plastic will be exempt from the tax.

At the same time, this will provide the federal budget with a new source of revenue: The authorities already expect around €805 million in 2027 and almost €1.5 billion annually from 2028. German industry associations have spoken out against the draft and are calling on the government to stop its accelerated passage.
