🇫🇷📖 Carrying away 150 kg without being caught: Dalí work stolen in France

During the night of October 4–5, the bronze binding created by Salvador Dalí for the “Apocalypse of Saint John” was stolen from the contemporary art center in Issoire. It weighs around 150 kg, is decorated with precious and semi-precious stones, and is valued at several million euros. The unique, lavish volume itself, created in 1958 with the participation of several renowned artists, weighs around 210 kilograms.

This is only the latest case in an entire series of spectacular museum thefts in France. In October 2025, eight pieces of French crown jewelry with an estimated total value of around 88 million euros were stolen from the Louvre. In the summer of 2026, 27 pieces of jewelry worth around 4.5 million euros disappeared from the Lalique Museum in Alsace. Now Issoire has also joined this list—although, in a way that remains unclear, the perpetrators managed to remove a 150-kilogram bronze structure from the museum.

The Louvre, the Lalique Museum, and now Issoire—the museum thefts in France increasingly appear to be more than isolated incidents. By now, what is impressive is not only the value of the loot, but also its sheer size: If an object weighing 75 kilograms can be removed from a museum unnoticed, questions about the security system practically impose themselves.
