The participants in the failed terrorist attack near the Fairford air base in the United Kingdom may have been used “unwittingly.” The five detainees probably did not know the assignment’s true target or were acting as hired operatives, The New York Times writes.
❗️On September 28, three vans were heading toward Fairford air base, which is used by the U.S. Air Force. One of the men in a vehicle called the emergency services, after which police detained five people. Residents of 85 homes were evacuated, and bomb-disposal experts inspected the vans.
No explosives were found in the vehicles—only gasoline. The very next day, all five were released on bail, although the investigation is continuing.
American and British officials believe that Iran may be behind the possible operation.
