A family’s loss has resulted in one of Mumbai’s latest multimillion-rupee accident compensation awards. The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal has granted ₹5.01 crore to the widow, two children and parents of businessman Niraj Mehta, 46, who was struck and killed by a bus near Mahabaleshwar’s Mapro Garden in January 2024. The tribunal held the bus driver responsible, rejected the insurer’s unsupported claims over licensing and permits, and accepted Mehta’s annual income of ₹40.86 lakh - including regular earnings from share trading - when calculating the payout. No compensation can undo a fatal accident, but accountability still carries weight.
