Free Fire (2016)Free Fire has a great premise, a strong cast, and the kind of chaotic energy that should make it an incredibly fun watch. The setting is deliberately limited, which gives the film an almost theatrical feel, and once things start going wrong, the entire story turns into an increasingly ridiculous exercise in bad decisions, bruised egos and people making an already terrible situation even worse!
The biggest problem for me was that I genuinely couldn’t find a single emotionally stable, sensible person in that entire group. 😭 Everyone seems to be operating on some combination of anger, arrogance, paranoia and questionable decision-making. After a while, I stopped wondering who was going to make the smart choice and simply accepted that nobody would.
I
t also becomes surprisingly difficult to keep track of everyone’s loyalties. Who is actually working with whom? Who currently hates whom? Who has switched sides? Does anyone even remember what their original plan was? At certain points, the characters themselves seem about as informed as the audience😐😂
That confusion is partly intentional and contributes to the film’s absurd humour, but it also makes the story feel repetitive after a while. There’s a fine line between entertaining chaos and simply watching a collection of dysfunctional people repeatedly make terrible decisions, and
Free Fire spends quite a lot of time on the latter!
Cillian Murphy is entertaining as always, and the cast generally commits completely to the madness. The film also has some genuinely funny moments and a distinctive style, so I can understand why someone might have a lot more fun with it than I did !
Overall score:
5.5/10
Entertaining in places, stylishly chaotic, but also exhausting. In summary:
not one normal person could be located in that warehouse, and by the end I was no longer entirely sure who was on whose side😐🔪😂
