Golden earrings with sphinxes and garnets (3rd–2nd century BCE),
from the Detroit Institute of Arts, carry a chilling legend.

To the Greeks, the sphinx symbolized a deadly riddle. Remember the myth—how it would ask travelers a question, and kill them if they answered wrong? Women wore such earrings as talismans, believing the creature would recognize its own and spare them, while the garnet absorbed misfortune.

The craftsmanship is equally striking: winged figures are detailed down to individual feathers, and the hoops are handwoven from the finest filigree threads.

Jim Bachor from Chicago fills potholes with mosaic art

There’s no surer way to escape the world than through art, and no surer way to connect with it than through art.

A magnificent Gospel cover from 1678, a masterpiece crafted by Kremlin workshops.

The golden cover, created under the supervision of Yuri Frobbos, is adorned with rubies, emeralds, and vivid relief enamel. At its center lies Christ enthroned, flanked by the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist. In the corners, the Evangelists are intricately depicted with their symbolic creatures—the eagle, lion, angel, and ox.

You can view this exquisite piece in person at the Armory Chamber of the Moscow Kremlin (Hall No. 2, Showcase No. 14).

Las Meninas: What secret lies in Diego Velázquez’s 1656 masterpiece?

The painting shows Infanta Margarita with maids, dwarfs, and a dog. Velázquez stands left, brush in hand—on his chest, the red cross of the Order of Santiago. But he wasn’t knighted until 1659, three years later. So why is the cross already there?

Some believe King Philip IV added it posthumously as a tribute. Others say a court painter repainted it—or that Velázquez updated it himself before dying. The romantic version—royal homage after death—endures.

Las Meninas means “maids of honor,” “attendants,” or “young noblewomen.”

"Forest Lake," 1890s

Eras aren’t chosen—
They live, they die.
Nothing’s more vulgar
Than begging and complaining,
As if you could trade one age for another
Like haggling at a market.

Every era is an iron age.
Yet a garden of wonders still smolders,
A cloud glimmers; at five years old
I should’ve died of scarlet fever,
Had I lived in some innocent age
Free from sorrow.

You count yourself among the fortunate,
But would you want to live under the Terrible?
Do you dream of Florence’s plague,
Of leprosy?
You want to ride first class,
Not in the dark hold?

Every era is an iron age.
Yet a garden of wonders still smolders,
A cloud glimmers; I’ll embrace
My age, my fate, in farewell.
Time is a trial.
Envy no one.

The grip is tight, unyielding.
Time is skin, not clothing.
Its mark runs deep—
Like fingerprints left on glass,
Its lines and folds
Are visible, if you look closely.

Alexander Kushner, 1978

The autumnal landscapes and still lifes by Austrian artist Olga Wisinger-Florian (1844–1926) captivate with their rich, vibrant texture and a rare gift for capturing the fleeting magic of nature in decline.

«How glad I am to live in a world that has Octobers!»

The performance unfolds on stage. But theatre also happens in the audience: in the silence before a pivotal line, in laughter, in shared emotion, and in applause at the end. Every story waits for its viewer — someone who will experience it in their own way. Perhaps you.

The Pyramid of Kukulcán at Chichén Itzá (8th–12th centuries) — a monumental Mayan temple and calendar. Its 4 staircases, each with 91 steps, plus the summit platform, add up to 365—the days of the year. During equinoxes, shadows here form the striking silhouette of a serpent descending the steps. Contrary to the film "Apocalypse," severed heads were not rolled down its sides; that grim ritual belonged to the Aztecs, hundreds of kilometers away. Today, climbing this Wonder of the World is strictly prohibited.

The paintings of Georgian artist Nino Chakvetadze —

a quiet return to childhood. Back to the time when trees were towering, emotions were pure, and winter twilight beyond the window promised a real fairy tale.

“We’ve all left childhood behind, and that fact compels me again and again to paint what I’ve lived through, what left its mark on my soul...”
— Nino Chakvetadze

Did you know the image of an anonymous drowned girl became one of the most reproduced faces in cultural history?

At the end of the 19th century, the body of a young woman was pulled from the Seine. The morgue’s pathologist was captivated by her unearthly smile and made a plaster cast of her face. Soon, the mask turned into a cult object. This unknown face inspired countless stories, novels, films, and ballets. Her likeness was mass-produced in plaster, hung in homes like artwork, and admired by writers like Camus and Nabokov.

In the 1960s, creators of the first CPR training mannequin chose this very mask for their model, naming the dummy "Resusci Anne". Since then, over 300 million people worldwide, practicing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, have touched the lips of this unknown Parisian girl. In a striking twist of fate, the face of a lifeless girl became the ultimate symbol of saving lives.

The Holbein Enigma: Why Is There a Skull in The Ambassadors?

Hans Holbein’s 1533 painting *The Ambassadors* shows two French diplomats amid symbols of power. At their feet, a strange grey blur hides a secret: viewed from an angle, it becomes a sharp human skull—an anamorphic illusion. This memento mori (“remember you must die”) reminds us that earthly status fades. The skull and portrait can’t be seen clearly at once—just as life distracts us from death’s inevitability.

John Collier
"Lady Godiva," 1897

This painting brings to life an 11th-century legend. To persuade her husband, the Earl, to reduce taxes on Coventry’s townspeople, the devout countess made a bold bargain: she rode naked through the city streets on horseback. In gratitude, the citizens shut themselves indoors—except for one man who peeked and was instantly struck blind. The earl had no choice but to honor his promise and abolish the unjust taxes.

What lengths would you go to stand up for justice and your principles?

The art of staying calm ☕️

In Makovsky’s painting *"The Officer's Nursemaid" (1894)*, a soldier in a station buffet is babysitting—judging by the title—a fussy officer’s child. The toddler is wailing, having thrown his shoe and bread aside while his mother steps into the restroom (just behind the "nursemaid"). Yet look at the orderly’s face: complete serenity. He simply sips tea from a saucer. Ever heard that wisdom? If you can't change the situation—change your attitude toward it!

Isaac Levitan
"Golden Autumn", 1895

The kiss of autumn's languid grace
Blazed through the woods like crimson flame,
And songs of streams with crystal trace
Sounded hushed, as if weary became.

Dry leaves fell from the trees—now pale, now red—
Mourning softly o'er the ground
Beneath the mist where dewdrops spread
In silence, all around.

The distant sun, in radiant dream,
Mused on abundance yet to be,
And kissed the earth’s own gentle gleam
In sweet surrender, weak and free.

And in the evenings, skies would glow
With robes of deep, blood-red delight,
While Hope’s blue doves, stained by woe,
Wept tears that burned into the night.

Soaring in beauty vast and still,
They drew hearts toward distant spheres,
And high above, against the chill,
Wove garlands of ethereal lilies fair.

That autumn full of burning song,
Like a wife with fruit-laden years,
Like Eve—the mother we belong—
Awakened life through joy and tears.

Nikolai Gumilev, "Autumn Song"

"Rooster Fight," ca. 1615

A man asked a trainer to assess his rooster for cockfights. After observing it, the trainer said: “It’s young, overconfident, attacks everyone—but not ready. It doesn’t pace itself and often loses. Leave it with me a week.”

A week later, the man returned.
— How is my rooster?
— It’s crushed by defeat, hides in its nest, afraid of its own beak. Not ready. Leave it another week.

After another week:
— Now?
— Strong, aggressive, bold—beats all! But still not ready.
— Why?!
— It sees enemies where there are none. One more week.

When the man came again:
— How is it now?
— Calm, motionless, like stone. Steady gaze. Others flee at the sight… Now—it’s ready.

True strength isn’t in aggression, but in inner calm, emotional maturity, and quiet confidence.
