The Pyramid of Kukulcán at Chichén Itzá (8th–12th centuries) — a monumental Mayan temple and calendar. Its 4 staircases, each with 91 steps, plus the summit platform, add up to 365—the days of the year. During equinoxes, shadows here form the striking silhouette of a serpent descending the steps. Contrary to the film "Apocalypse," severed heads were not rolled down its sides; that grim ritual belonged to the Aztecs, hundreds of kilometers away. Today, climbing this Wonder of the World is strictly prohibited.
