The Painting That Drove Its Creator Mad in Front of an Audience
Art history is full of troubled artists, but Mikhail Vrubel’s *The Demon Downcast* is an extraordinary case. In 1902, while the painting was on display at a major exhibition in St. Petersburg, Vrubel began to unravel before the public’s eyes. Struggling with a severe mental illness, he could find no peace. Every morning, he arrived at the gallery with brushes and paints and furiously reworked the face of the fallen spirit as stunned visitors watched.
He altered the canvas’s colors, erased the demon’s wild eyes and made its pose even more contorted—repainting the head dozens of times. Visitors watched in alarm as the expression shifted from deep sorrow to chilling fury, day after day. Vrubel was taken from the exhibition straight to a clinic.
