Chapter 1. Frank Gehry, the Modernist?

Let’s wish Frank Gehry, who turned 94 this week, many happy returns of the day and celebrate his birthday by travelling to Idyllwild, a town in California known for being one of the first to elect a dog for mayor (the last one, the golden retriever Maximus, passed away a few months ago) as well as the location of Gehry’s first building ever, the David cabin designed together with Greg Walsh, Gehry’s USC friend, in 1957.

Sadly, little is known about this project, which we find remarkable in the context of Gehry’s evolution as an architect. Although the cabin dates back to the time when Californian modernism was burgeoning (e.g. the Case Study Houses program was still going strong and unique modernist gems by Raphael Soriano, Richard Neutra, John Lautner, etc. were rising here and there), it has nothing in common with the local modernist idiom of the day and is more reminiscent of earlier dwellings by Frank Lloyd Wright.
