Not only Ilf and Petrov travelled the US in 1935-1936; a group of Soviet engineers and Party men was sent to the States to acquire in-depth knowledge on refrigeration technologies, so 1937 saw both the publishing of “One-Storied America”, Ilf and Petrov’s famous travelogue, in which the authors described their amazement upon seeing “an electric refrigerator, which not only needed no ice but, on the contrary, prepared it in a special little white bath-tub … in the shape of neat transparent little cubes” in an average American household, and the release of the KTZ-120, Russia’s first compressor refrigerator for domestic use, which was produced by Kharkov Tractor Factory. We’ve failed to find any decent pictures of the KTZ-120, but it looked quite like its contemporaries made by Electrolux, GE, AEG, and Westinghouse.
Efforts to develop a household fridge soon stalled because of WWII and were resumed in 1949, when the Council of Ministers enforced a decree to spur mass-production of compressor refrigerators for home use.
