We’d like to deviate a little from our routine of publishing coffee-related stories on Mondays and share yet another writeup today. The reason is that the invention we are featuring today was both literally and figuratively revolutionary. In 1927, Florence-born brothers Giuseppe and Bruno Bambi decided to convert their workshop into a company that would produce espresso machines thereby founding La Marzocco. The first machine they manufactured was the Fiorenza commissioned and designed by Ascanio Galetti. Later the same year, the brothers presented the first version of La Marzocco, a machine that would undergo numerous functional alterations, most importantly in the number of group heads, and take different shapes in response to the changing aesthetics – only the lion, the symbol of the company and its home town, remained unchanged.
When 1939 came around, the brothers filed a patent application for a truly breakthrough coffee maker, Marus. Since neither the machine nor pictures thereof have survived and the only images of the Marus were produced based on the original drawings and aluminum-cast blueprints, we are intentionally omitting visuals for this invention and inviting everyone to guess, as we always do on Fridays, what it is that was so groundbreaking about this machine.
