Opening this selection of images, most of which are brought to you courtesy of MAMM, is a signature photograph by Alexander Ptitsyn (1933-1988), a celebrated Soviet photographer whose bio is regrettably very short. He started his career in 1953 as a laboratory assistant with the Sovetsky Soyuz magazine and had his first publication credit in 1954 already, with a series of pictures from a hockey match between the USSR and USA. In 1957, he was promoted to the role of a special correspondent, the only one on the magazine’s staff whom Henri Cartier-Bresson wished to be introduced to during his 1960 visit to Moscow, according to Sergey Kivrin. In 1970, Ptitsyn had his personal exhibition in Yugoslavia that showcased 111 of his works. The artist was also known to survive a severe car accident that required a complicated surgery and claimed his peripheral vision. His life ended in 1988 when he was killed on the street.

Compared to these bits and pieces, the opening photograph, which earned Ptitsyn multiple awards and was featured all over the world, has a better-documented background. In the early 1960s, the Sovetsky Soyuz magazine was publishing an article on the achievements of the Soviet oil industry and needed a “catchy” image to begin with. Ptitsyn had just returned from an assignment to Tyumen with a series of photos that included an image of an oil rig reflected in a puddle. He grabbed his camera and went to the garage of Moscow Art Theater, just across the street from his office. There, he found a driver whose hands were covered with grease and, after asking him to cup his hands, poured a handful of water mixed with tooth powder in and took a shot. All Ptitsyn had to do afterwards was to combine the two images into one…

P.S. Unfortunately, we have found only a few photographs by Ptitsyn, in MAMM’s archives and elsewhere, and are posting all of them here. Note that the high jump image shows Valeriy Brumel set a new world record in 1963.
