Most of you heard us say in multiple posts that the history of modernism is closely interrelated with the history of the 20th-century wars. A telling example of this relationship is the story of Mathieu Matégot, a Hungarian artist and a graduate of Budapest Academy of Fine Art and Architecture who moved to Paris in 1931 and joined the French Resistance in the early months of WWII. Caught and placed in a prisoner-of-war camp, Matégot was sent to work for a cogwheel factory where his dexterity with metalworking earned him access to his own design office. Escaping twice, he was returned to the factory on both of the occasions and was finally liberated at the end of the war.

When he moved back to Paris as a naturalized French citizen, he set up a small workshop of his own to produce furniture, lamps, and other household items - Matégot’s designs were so successful that his firm would quickly grow and expand to have offices outside of France. The reason we mentioned his wartime past is because it was during the imprisonment that Matégot had a chance to work with perforated sheet metal and see the potential this material had in the field of design. This experience prompted him to develop his own material and technology he would patent as "Rigitulle", a portmanteau of "rigid" and "tulle" which refers to a combination of perforated metal sheets and metal tubing Matégot used to create various lightweight and semitransparent products.

Since we have never mentioned Matégot or featured mid-century planters in this channel, here is a selection of Matégot-designed sculptural flower pots and planters - something he produced a wealth of over his career, probably more than any other prolific designer.

To be continued.
