In the 1920s, Velox, a Ferrara-based manufacturer, produced electric coffeemakers with a separate filter basket. Similar pieces were available from other manufacturers, but Velox’s ones were patented by Italian engineer Paolo Malago. By the start of the 1960s, Velox coffeemakers straightened out, losing excessive curves, and came with an integrated filter basket and a thermostat to make sure coffee did not burn, but their mode of action remained the same. By the 1970s, Velox launched a series of portable models in pop colors that had a 12V plug compatible with a car cigarette lighter. Called Autobars, these espresso machines were advertised as follows, “It's no longer a dream to have a good coffee in the car while traveling or while stopping.”
In 2012, this concept was echoed in the Fiat 500L that could be purchased with an espresso machine add-on, but that’s a different story.
