A me capita spesso.
Penso di ascoltare e invece sento:
un gatto, una voce, il gallo.
Sento e penso a me.

Tornare dove a casa?

Anzi no, dentro te.

🤍

There is a place outside the city that draws me inwards.

There I can hear them:
a tree, a scent, the groaning of the earth, the murmur of the sky.

This is how you listen:
first you have to set off, walk a long way, in silence if possible.
Then you arrive at a place they call a wood, where you still cannot hear properly.
So you kneel down.
You let the earth touch you.

To listen, you must always ground yourself in the earth.
Otherwise, it’s a false kind of listening: it’s called ‘hearing’.
It’s like listening with a deaf ear.
It happens to me often.
I think I’m listening, but instead I’m just hearing:
a cat, a voice, a cockerel.
I hear and I think of myself.
I don’t think of the cat, the voice, the cockerel.

Once you’ve settled on the ground with your knees and hands, you take your cloak or hood and make a little shelter over yourself.
A small shelter.
Then you bend down even further.
You land, quite literally, head and stomach first.
Then, and only then, can you begin to listen.

You can tell whether you’re merely hearing or truly listening.
When you merely hear, what surrounds you bores you and causes trouble.
You just want to run away.
When you listen, what surrounds you envelops you and becomes a source of strength.
You just want to stay.
You’d spend hours and hours listening.
And sometimes you do stay, if no one calls you to do something else or to go home.
Go back where? Home?
If I’m already at home.
With my cloak and my hood.

They call this prayer:
listening to God and feeling as though you’re at a friend’s house.
For me it’s true, but there’s more to it.
You can also listen to a friend and feel as though you’re in God’s house.
Perhaps this, too, is prayer.[…]

There’s a place outside the city that brings me back inside myself.

Or rather, inside you.
